US finalizing arms sales to Israel, Arab nations
By ROBERT BURNS and DONNA CASSATA
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Pentagon and congressional officials say the Defense Department is working out final details of a $10 billion sale of warplanes, transport aircraft and advanced missiles to Israel and other Arab nations.
The deal comes in advance of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel's trip next week to the Middle East.
The sale has been in the works for a year. It's to help counter the growing threat from Iran.
The officials say the U.S. will sell V-22 Osprey aircraft, KC-135 refueling tanker planes and missiles to Israel, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. They were not authorized to publicly discuss the deal and spoke on condition of anonymity.
The New York Times first reported the impending sale.
Hagel will visit Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
