Lightning sparks storage tank fire; storm leads to power outages

JEFFERSON/CHAMBERS COUNTY - Firefighters from a number of different departments have put out flames that began burning when lightning struck a storage tank Wednesday morning in Jefferson County.

Investigators say lightning hit the storage tank at about 8 a.m. on a private road near Highway 73 and Labelle Road.

Deputy Rod Carroll tells KFDM News no one was hurt.

Volunteer firefighters from Hamshire, Labelle-Fannett, Winnie-Stowell, Cheek and China put out the fire by about 11 a.m.

The storm that moved across the region early Wednesday has caused scattered power outages.

The outages have forced the East Chambers school district to delay the start of classes until 10 a.m.

1,800 customers lost power in the Winnie/Dayton area, according to Debi Derrick with Entergy, who told KFDM News electricity should be restored to everyone in that area by 4 p.m.

About 100 customers lost power in the Silsbee area. Their power should be back by 9 a.m.

There are scattered outages in Sour Lake. Power should be restored by about 10 a.m.
