Authorities say 2 women plotted to kill officer

LONGVIEW, Texas (AP) -- Authorities say two East Texas women have been arrested for plotting to kill a police officer and collect his life insurance policy.

Amanda Denise Smith was taken into custody last week on a charge of solicitation to commit capital murder of a peace officer. Investigators say she contacted an undercover officer under the belief he was a hit man who would target her estranged husband, who's a policeman in Hallsville.

Also arrested was 18-year-old Sydney Brook Sides, who authorities say was involved in the conspiracy and faces the same charge as the 24-year-old Smith. Each remained in custody Monday at the Harrison County jail on a $200,000 bond.

Investigators say Smith was willing to pay $5,000 to have her husband killed.

Online jail records did not indicate attorneys for the women.
