Collision between tractor trailer and pickup kills toddler, injures two people

JEFFERSON COUNTY - A 22 month old child is dead, after a collision between a tractor trailer and a pickup truck that left the 18 wheeler on its side and seriously injured several other people in the west Jefferson County city of China.

Investigators say the vehicles collided at about 7 p.m. Tuesday on Highway 90 just before the traffic signal at Broadway in China. The impact left the tractor trailer on its side. The pickup truck is upright on the road.

A spokeswoman for Acadian Ambulance told KFDM News two people from the pickup truck were transported in separate ambulances to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont.

The driver of the truck, 31 year old Annabel Topete of China, is in ICU at St. Elizabeth. The driver of the truck, 44 year old Charles Patterson of Orange, is in stable condition at Baptist Hospital.

The 22 month old child passenger in the Ford truck was pronounced dead at the hospital. The child or Topete were not restrained by a seat belt or car seat.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is investigating the accident. Troopers do not believe alcohol was involved.
