FBI releases sketch of 'Teddy Bear Bandit' in Chase Bank robbery

HOUSTON – From KHOU TV and www.khou.com – Investigators have released a sketch of a violent bank robber who physically assaulted a Chase Bank worker Tuesday morning.

It all began at about 6:34 a.m., before the bank in the 4100 block of FM 1960 opened its doors to customers.  For security reasons, investigators wouldn’t say how the man, armed with a pistol, got inside the bank before it opened.

They say the two workers, who were preparing to open the bank for business, were threatened, and attacked by the robber. Investigators say one of the workers was pistol-whipped by the robber.

“The individual was verbally aggressive, physically aggressive,” explained Agent Shauna Dunlap with the Houston office of the FBI. “Fired gunshots, several gunshots not just one, into a wall of the bank.”

The unknown man then grabbed cash and slipped out of the bank through a back door.

The FBI reviewed surveillance video from inside of the bank and saw the man wore a rather unusual light brown hat with furry ears and a tail. The hat has earned him the nickname “Teddy Bear Bandit.”

He’s described as dark-skinned, about 6 feet to 6-feet-2-inches tall, in his 20s to early 30s, with a skinny build.  He also wore a black long-sleeved jacket with an unknown design on the back, and white stripes around the cuffs of the jacket.  Under the jacket he wore a white T-shirt.  The suspect was also wearing jeans and dark-colored shoes.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS or the Houston FBI office at 713-693-5000. A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
