Groves P.D. says man confesses to stealing guns, other items from unlocked cars

GROVES - Investigators with the Groves Police Department say a teenager has confessed to breaking into unlocked vehicles and stealing guns and other items.

Port Arthur Police police arrested Jessie Khuyt Phan, 18, of Port Arthur Sunday on a charge of theft of a firearm. His bond is $20,000. Additional charges are pending.

Groves investigators interviewed the teen at the Jefferson County Correctional Facility and they say he confessed to a series of recent burglaries of vehicles. The suspect told police he would park his car on the side of a road and walk along the street while looking for unlocked vehicles. He stole guns, stereo equipment, GPS units and other items from the unlocked vehicles.

The Groves Police Department is reminding people that auto burglaries are crimes of opportunity that can often be avoided by locking your car doors and removing everything of value from plain sight. If you leave valuable items visible in your car, your car is automatically a target.

Police say it can take less than 30 seconds to enter an unlocked car and grab what is in plain view.   Like all crime prevention, it involves limiting the criminal's ability and/or opportunity to commit the crime.

Leave nothing in plain sight that might make your vehicle worth investigating by a thief-not even loose coins or a CD.

Set car alarms if your car is equipped with one. Many people believe that car-alarms no longer make a difference, but they can be an effective deterrent to an auto-burglar, who most often chooses the easiest target.

Groves Police say they can't be everywhere at once and count on residents to be their eyes and ears and immediately report suspicious activities to the Police Department.
