JEFFERSON COUNTY - Since the beginning of the year, 36 Democratic Party officeholders from Texas have made the switch to the Republican Party.
The latest three are all in Jefferson County. One commissioner and two justices of the peace told a crowd during a news conference Friday at the Pompano Club they've always been conservatives at heart. They said after praying, talking about it with their families, and taking a look at the people they serve, they knew switching to the Republican Party was the right decision for them.
Jefferson County Precinct 2 Commissioner Brent Weaver, Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Ray Chesson and Precinct 7 Justice of the Peace Brad Burnett made the announcement in front of U.S. Rep. Randy Weber and other GOP leaders.
Each said he gave a lot of thought to the decision. In announcing the switch, the officeholders said while they've changed political parties, their commitment, drive and vision for Jefferson County go beyond party lines. They say their goal remains the same--to serve the voters they represent.
