Son of Big Bopper dies in Katy
KATY - A man with a connection to a legendary rock 'n' roll star from Southeast Texas has died.
Jay P. Richardson, 54, the son of "The Big Bopper," died Wednesday morning in Katy, according to a website operated in his father's name.
"The Big Bopper," Jiles Perry Richardson, Jr., was born in Sabine Pass and is best known for singing "Chantilly Lace." His son never knew him because he was born about 80 days after his father died in a 1957 plane crash in Iowa that killed Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens. Singer-songwriter Don McLean memorialized the trio in his song "American Pie," about what has come to be known as "The Day the Music Died."
His son toured the country singing his father's songs. In 2007 he had his father's body exhumed at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Beaumont to, in his words, put to rest his lingering questions about whether his father died on impact in the plane crash. A forensic anthropologist determined he did and said there was no evidence of foul play.
Jay P. Richardson is survived by his wife, Patty, sons Jay Jr. and Thomas, daughter Ashlyn, and other relatives.
