More than 40 apply for Jasper Police Chief

More than forty people have applied for the position of Jasper police chief.

The city has been without a permanent chief since june of 2012 when council voted four to one to fire Rodney Pearson the first black police chief of Jasper.

Council questioned Pearson about how many vacation days he'd taken and other issues.

The city hired a Dallas company to help search for a new police chief.

Mayor Mike Lout told KFDM News the recruitment firm will narrow the list of applicants to 12.

They include Kirbyville police chief Paul Brister, lieutenant James Mike Poindexter of the Jasper police department and Randy Martin, the director of public safety at the Lamar University police department.

Council will interview the finalists and make the final decision in hiring a police chief.

Mayor Lout says he expects to a have a new police chief in place by the first of the year.


JASPER - The City of Jasper has released the names of 43 people, including a Jasper police lieutenant, the Chief of Police of the Kirbyville Police Department and the Director of Public Safety at the Lamar University Police Department, who've applied for the Jasper Chief of Police Position.

During a contentious meeting in June of 2012, city council voted 4-1 to fire Chief Rodney Pearson. The city hired him in April of 2011. Council questioned Pearson about how many vacation days he'd taken and other issues. Pearson was Jasper's first black police chief.

The city hired a Dallas-based executive recruitment company to help search for a new police chief. Mayor Mike Lout told KFDM News the recruitment firm will narrow the list of applicants to 12. They include Kirbyville Police Chief Paul Brister and Lt. James Mike Poindexter of the Jasper Police Department. Council will interview the finalists and make the final decision in hiring a police chief. 

Mayor Lout says he expects to a have a new police chief in place by the first of the year.

"I want the best person for the job," Mayor Lout told KFDM News Friday, "whether it's someone locally or out of the area."
