Postal Service ending retail operations at Walden Road, moving processing center

BEAUMONT - KFDM News has learned the U.S. Postal Service is following the recommendations of a study and closing the post office on Walden Road in the near future, as well as the processing center at the facility.

The Postal Service is expanding the post office on Avenue A to accomodate an expected increase in business due to the closure of the post office on Walden Road. A spokeswoman told KFDM News the work should take a minimum of several months and possibly longer. Once the work is complete, the post office on Walden Road will close.

The spokeswoman told us she didn't know if outside mail collection boxes would remain open. She said it's likely the Postal Service would seek to sell the building once it's vacated.

It's moving mail processing from Walden Road to a center in Houston. The processing center in Beaumont will close once the transfer of operations is complete.

Delivery times of mail to most residences and businesses will not change, according to the Postal Service. However, delivery times of mail to some residences may change due to concurrent cost saving activities in delivery.

Affected career employees will be reassigned to the North Houston Processing and Distribution Center or to other vacant positions.

Beaumont Texas From United States Postal Service

As a result of a study that resumed on May 1, 2013, the Postal Service has made the decision to move mail processing operations from the Beaumont Processing and Distribution Facility (P&DF) to the North Houston Processing and Distribution Center (P&DC) in Houston. Once the transfer of operations is completed, the Beaumont P&DF will be closed.

Local mail service will not be affected by the move.

Houston District Manager, William J Mitchell said, Given the drastic decline in mail volume the Postal Service has experienced, with a decline of nearly 26 billion pieces this past year, we must take action to reduce the size of our mail processing network. Consolidating operations and placing our people where we need them is necessary if the Postal Service is to remain viable to provide mail service to the nation.

I understand our employees concern over this move, Mitchell added, but the consolidation makes sense given the fiscal realities. The North Houston Processing and Distribution Center has the capacity to handle the additional workload and we can realize significant savings by shifting operations there.

Affected career employees will be reassigned to the North Houston Processing and Distribution Center or to other vacant positions.

A retail presence will be maintained at the Beaumont P&DF for a limited period of time; however, after the consolidation and subsequent modification of South End Station, retail and other services currently available at the Beaumont P&DF will be relocated to Beaumont South End Station, approximately 4.5 miles away. A local postmark remains available for stamped First-Class Mail at our retail locations.

Delivery times of mail to most residences and businesses will not change as a result of the AMP.  However, delivery times of mail to some residences may change due to concurrent cost saving activities in delivery.

I am confident the transition will be smooth and transparent to our customers and they will continue to receive the same excellent service they always have, said Mitchell.
