LIVE: BISD Board approves decreased time for public comments
BEAUMONT-By: Leslie Rangel
The first meeting was a breakdown of what campuses needed improvement.
In the second meeting the board revealed their superior rating from the Texas Education Agency.
But it wasn't perfect, they scored low on fund balance deficiencies.
They say a cut in state funding is one reason why the district had to tap into the fundbalance there was also a decrease in funds because FEMA has not given the district more than 7 million dollars in proceeds.
Finally, in the regular meeting the final vote for reducing public comments passed in a 5 to 2 approval.
The time was cut from 45 minutes to 30 minutes and anyone wishing to speak for the full 2 1/2 minutes must complete a form by 4:30 the day before the meeting.
Cheering, applause, posters or signs are also banned.
Board members questioned whether it would be legal to prevent people from bringing signs into the board room but attorney Melody Chappell says there were no conflicts.
Also at the meeting, Attorney Michael Getz offered the board if they canceled a November 5 election he would take no court action.
But in exchange they would have to file a proclamation with Governor Rick Perry within 10 days to hold an out of time election.
It would be under a 5-2 plan with the 5F map where all seven positions would be up for re-election.
The governor would order that election to take place within 60 days or by the end of the year whichever comes first.
No word from the district yet if they would accept.
