Police identify elderly couple at center of a Port Arthur murder-suicide investigation

PORT ARTHUR- by Haley Bull

Neighbors remembered the elderly couple at the center of a murder-suicide investigation and thought about how happy they seemed when they last saw them. A preliminary autopsy report is shedding light on the deaths of the couple.

Port Arthur police said John and Patricia Knight each died from a single gunshot wound, according to preliminary autopsy reports. Investigators said they don't know who fired the first shot.

KFDM News spoke with neighbors of the couple who called them "sweet," "super" and "upbeat" people. They said John Knight was the type of man who waved when you drove by. They saw Patricia Knight trimming the yard last weekend.

According to police, the Knight's son discovered the bodies Wednesday afternoon. He hadn't heard from them and went to check on his 76 year old parents. Police were on the scene on Gulf Hill Dr. near Jimmy Johnson Blvd. shortly after 4 in the afternoon.

Officers know they have to give the family time and space, and hope eventually they can provide some answers.

"When we spoke to them last night, I mean, obvious as anyone would be, they're in shock, a little bit of disbelief. We have not talked to them today, giving them their time to grieve," Sgt. Scott Gaspard with the Port Arthur Police Department, said. "I'm sure they'll come to us with answers and we'll open our arms up and welcome them in with whatever we can, answers we can have for them. But we haven't spoke with them today," Gaspard said.

"Like I said, it's a tragedy that I wouldn't want to see anybody's family go through and they're handling it, I mean, the way you would imagine," Gaspard said.

Investigators said any time an elderly couple is involved in a case like this one, police look at whether health problems might have been a factor in what happened.
