Neighbors prompt horse investigation

HARDIN COUNTY-By: Leslie Rangel

If someone spots a horse and believes it is abused or neglected, sheriff's deputies or animal control officers check it out.

Sometimes they find evidence to confirm the abuse or neglect, but what happens when law enforcement officers have concerns but the evidence falls short.

These horses are getting the food they need for now, but neighbors wonder when their next meal may come.

"The people just kind of left them here, they come every now and then," Lisa Bozyone, a neighbor says.

Bozyone lives next door to the property on Hooks Lane Road just outside of Silsbee.

She says the owners of the horses paid the landowner to allow them to keep the animals there.

The horses owner told says she couldn't afford to take them to Beaumont when then couple moved.

"They leave a little hay, they fill the water up but one little thing of food, you know," Bozyone said.

Bozyone believes it's not enough to keep the horses healthy.

"There's scraps of metal, there's all the junk toys, and stuff that they're stepping in," Bozyone says.

Some of the horses do look malnourished, but Hardin County deputies say there's not much they can do.

The horses do have food and shelter but neighbors disagree, they say something must be done

"It's hard to go to bed at night knowing there are animals that don't have shelter or don't have food," Bozyone said, fighting back tears.

The woman who owns the horses says she doesn't have the money it would take to watch them day and night.

She says they mean so much to her she doesn't want to give them up.

"So it's just sad to watch it, especially when you live so close," Bozyone says.

"It's just like they have souls, God created them, they have feelings too," Bozyone said.

Law enforcement officials say if you suspect any animals may be malnourished or neglected contact your local police department or sheriff's office.
