Former longtime commissioner Jimmie Cokinos dies
A former longtime Jefferson County Commissioner has died.
Former Jefferson County Commissioner Jimmie Cokinos was 96 years old.
He was the first Republican elected to Jefferson County Commissioners Court and he also served as mayor of Beaumont in the 1950's.
Cokinos' funeral is set for Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at Saint Anthony Cathedral Basilica.
JEFFERSON COUNTY - Former longtime Jefferson County commissioner Jimmie Cokinos has died, according to employees at the Jefferson County Courthouse who say they were told of his death.
Cokinos was 96.
He was the first Republican elected to Jefferson County Commissioners Court.
He also served as mayor of Beaumont in the 1950's.
Funeral arrangements are pending with Broussard's.
"He was a true leader for the City of Beaumont and Jefferson County," Commissioner Bo Alfred told KFDM News. "In tough times he stood up for the people. Sometimes we had heated discussions but we could talk afterwards and it was a friendly thing. It was part of the structure for the betterment of Jefferson County. That's something to look at as a real statesman when it comes to doing what's right for the community."
