Man stabbed to death with a kitchen knife remembered
PORT ARTHUR- by Haley Bull
New light is being shed on the circumstances surrounding the murder of a Port Arthur man. Investigators said they believe the man's ex-wife stabbed him during a domestic dispute with a kitchen knife and lived with his dead body for a week. Port Arthur Police arrested and charged Gayle Waller, 52, for the murder of Daniel Dubois, 59.
Neighbors and family remembered Dubois as a man always willing to help others.
"I loved him, I loved him like a second dad," Jeremi Rose said. He lived across the street from Dubois for more than 20 years.
"If you asked him, he would go to the end of the Earth to help you out, no matter what it was," Rose said. He said he was a neighbor you could count on.
"Everybody knew him well, he was a real friendly neighbor. Everyone could count on him you know," Rose said. "He would always bring your garbage can in for you or bring you a plate of food, whatever it was. You know Christmas time, he always had a place to sit at my table."
Rose said Dubois was a friendly neighbor.
"We still can't believe it. You know, we're still waiting for him to pull in the driveway, you know, I mean, we just can't believe it," he said. Now, he said the community is in shock.
"He's been missing since last Saturday. He was supposed to go hunting and then he never showed back up," Rose said.
When Dubois didn't show, police said his brother filed a missing persons report Thursday and went to check on him Saturday. Police got the call to 2860 Manning St. for a dead body around 3:30 p.m. that day.
"Gayle come out, then all of the sudden all the people pulled up and they said they found him in the back room," Rose said.
Port Arthur Police said Dubois' ex-wife, Gayle Waller, is charged with murder.
"We believed that a lady that was living at the house with him who was actually his ex-wife may have known something," Port Arthur Police Sgt. Scott Gaspard said. "She voluntarily came to the police station to give a statement as a witness. Shortly after that we determined that she was the probable suspect."
Sgt. Gaspard said police believe she'd been living with the dead body for a week.
Investigators said they believe Waller stabbed Dubois with a kitchen knife Oct. 26th, and that Dubois later died from his injuries.
"Had it not been for a relative checking on him, it probably still wouldn't be discovered," Sgt. Gaspard said.
His son told KFDM News, "My father was a good man who would do anything he could for anyone."
Waller's bond was set at $200,000. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning.
