Major bridges now closed except Purple Heart
Beaumont Police Department
NWS expects more precipitation through this evening in the Beaumont area. Highway conditions are extremely icy and hazardous at this time and IH10 had to be closed in the City for safety purposes. There have been intermittent closures of the Purple Heart (Neches River) bridge, but the goal is to keep it open. Since the Memorial and Rainbow bridges in Port Arthur (Hwy 87) are closed, the remaining alternative routes involve transit through Lumberton on Hwy69N.
Currently, the two alternatives provided for eastbound IH10 traffic include:
1. Exit at Walden Road then go west to Major Drive, head north past College and go straight to Tram Road, then East toward Eastex FWY, then head north toward Lumberton take 96 to Evadale, at HWY 105 go east to IH10
2. Take the Walden Exit and go west to Major Drive, then north to College, then an option of continuing straight to Tram, or east to MLK, then north to IH10 and back over the Purple Heart Bridge if it's open
Westbound IH10 traffic is diverted to the service road just west of the Purple Heart Bridge after entering the City, and then options include remaining on the service road west or turning north or south on MLK.
NWS does anticipate the weather clearing up Wednesday morning which will potentially help melt the ice before noon.
Weather conditions permitting, the City of Beaumont plans to open City offices at 1PM Wednesday afternoon and expects all employees to be available for normal assigned duties by that time.

The Purple Heart/Neches River bridge is currently open with the hope it will stay passable; however, highways in Beaumont are becoming heavily iced. At this time, actions are being taken to close all overpasses in Beaumont on IH 10, Eastex Frwy, and Cardinal Drive and move all traffic to service roads, so traffic may not start moving very quickly.
TxDOT is assisting with signage and the media is asked to encourage the public to use alternative routes through Beaumont if possible. Meanwhile crews are working to keep the service roads passable and get traffic moving. Traffic on MLK Pkwy over Park and Pennsylvania streets has also been moved to the service roads.
An alternative route is available for Eastbound IH10 traffic using Major to 105 Eastex, then north through Lumberton and Evadale and Buna, to highway 105 and back to IH10. Another eastbound alternative is College east to MLK then north to E. Lucas, then west to Eastex Freeway, and north through Lumberton.
An alternative route for westbound IH 10 traffic leaving Orange is to use Highway 105 in Vidor then to Evadale and north on 96 through Lumberton to Highway 105 then west to Major, then south to IH 10.
SOUTHEAST TEXAS - The Rainbow and Veterans Memorial Bridges are now closed because of icing, as are the MLK Bridge to Pleasure Island, the Intracoastal Bridge to Sabine Pass and the Causeway Bridge to Louisiana.
The Purple Heart Memorial Bridge remained open as of 10 a.m. Tuesday.
The City of Beaumont has closed a number of bridges and overpasses, including the Maury Meyers Bridge, Lindbergh Overpass, Dowlen Road Overpass and the overpass at Brooks and Major Drive.
Police have closed Cardinal Drive and they're detouring traffic onto the feeder road. The Eastex Freeway remains open.
Crews with the Texas Department of Transportation are spreading de-icing material on bridges and overpasses.
Officers say stay home if you don't have to travel. All school districts in the region cancelled classes for the day. Lamar University and the other LU campuses are closed. Most private schools are also shut down for the day.
