Man sentenced to 25 years for impersonating a firefighter

JEFFERSON COUNTY - A judge has sentenced a man to 25 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of impersonating a public servant.

John M. Weatherly, 58, of Port Arthur, was sentenced Wednesday by Judge Lindsey Scott, according to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office.

According to prosecutors, Weatherly entered the M & M convenience store on Proctor Street in Port Arthur on October 26, 2011. Testimony at trial showed Weatherly was wearing a helmet similar to one firefighters wear and a raincoat made to appear like a fireman's coat. Weatherly indicated to the store clerk and patrons that he was there to check the electrical box, claiming a wreck had occurred at a different location. Using his disguise as a firefighter, Weatherly made his way behind the counter where he tried to steal lottery tickets. When the clerk tried to stop him, a customer, realizing Weatherly wasn't a firefighter, held Weatherly until police arrived.

Once the jury convicted Weatherly, additional testimony indicated he had previously been convicted of two counts of delivery of a controlled substance and one count of felony assault of a family member. The jury deliberated in the punishment phase and decided on 25 years.
