Congresswoman: Justice Dept. to probe Alfred Wright death

SABINE COUNTY - by Scott Lawrence

The office of Houston congressman Sheila Jackson Lee says the Justice Department will investigate the death of Alfred Wright.

Wright's body was found November 25 near Hemphill in Sabine County. Relatives reported him missing November 7.

The official autopsy listed Wright's cause of death as an accidental drug overdose from a combination of cocaine, methamphetamine and amphetamine.

Relatives say they believe he may have been murdered and they say race may have been a factor. Wright was black.

The Texas Rangers have been investigating and that law enforcement agency asked the F.B.I. to assist.

Congresswoman Lee urged Attorney General Eric Holder and the Justice Department to investigate. Lee's office released a statement Monday night indicating the Justice Department will look into the death:

"The Department of Justice will investigate and take appropriate action in connection with the tragic and mysterious death of Alfred Wright, a 28-year-old African American male from Jasper, Texas."

Tuesday afternoon the family of Alfred Wright sent comments to KFDM News addressing the new development:

"The Wright family is extremely grateful to Congresswoman Sheila Jackson lee and her dedicated staff.

The Wright family is hopeful that the united states department of justice will find the truth concerning the mysterious disappearance and death of Alfred Wright.

The Wright family is also hopeful that the DOJ will fully investigate the actions and inactions on the part of the Sabine County Sheriff's department.

There are many questions to be answered.

The Wright family requests that anyone in the community that has information concerning either the disappearance or death of Alfred Wright please contact the United States Department of Justice by email: ASKDOJ@us.doj.gov or phone: 202-514-2000."
