Smoke detector alerts family to fire

BEAUMONT - Beaumont firefighters are crediting a smoke detector with alerting a family to a fire that heavily damaged a home.

The fire was reported at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday at 862 Porter Street. When firefighters arrived they saw flames covering much of the home.

A smoke detector awakened the homeowner and she was able to escape without injury before firefighters arrived.

The fire caused extensive damage to the home. The fire originated in a bedroom and appears to be accidental. The Red Cross was called to assist the homeowner.
