Jefferson County deputies find 6 1/2 pounds of heroin in man's car
JEFFERSON COUNTY - Jefferson County deputies discovered 6 1/2 pounds of heroin in the car of a man who told them he was returning to Virginia after visiting an 86-year-old friend at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston.
On Monday, February 10, a deputy with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office stopped the driver of a GMC SUV for a traffic violation, obscured license plate, on Interstate 10 East at the 843 mile marker.
Investigators say the driver appeared extremely nervous. The driver said he was returning to Clifton, Virginia after visiting an 86-year-old friend that was hospitalized in Houston. When the deputy asked which hospital, the driver responded "Texas Children's."
The deputy asked for consent to search the vehicle. The driver consented. In the back seat the deputy located a satchel containing three bundles wrapped in duct tape. The three kilos of heroin, or about 6 1/2 pounds, have an approximate street value of $250,000.
The driver was identified as Ronald Clifton Brown, 64, of Clifton, Virginia. He's is the the Jefferson County Jail on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance. A judge set bond at $100,000.
