A Fayette County deputy was shot Thursday while trying to serve a warrant. This happened at the Carter Motel in La Grange.

A La Grange Police spokesperson said two deputies were serving a felony warrant for failing to register as a sex offender on a person at a local store when the suspect pulled a knife and cut one of the deputies. The suspect then ran to the nearby hotel room and barricaded himself inside.

Jimmy Mash says he was inside the Dollar General store when this confrontation started.

"Two cops walked in. They walked straight for him like they knew who they were looking for, and called his name. He said, 'No!' Pushed the one cop back, cop drew his taser, and cop fired it," Mash said.

That's when the suspect pulled his knife, and charged at the deputies, according to Mash.

The suspect opened fire when the deputies approached the suspect's room at the motel. One deputy, identified as Calvin "CJ" Lehmann, was shot and is in critical condition at an Austin hospital. The suspect is now in custody.

According to the Fayette County Sheriff's Office, Lehmann was shot in the face and has lost his sight in one eye. Doctors are trying to save his other eye.

Mash lives at the Carter Motel, and says the suspect lives in the room next to him. He heard the shootout after returning from the store.

"At that time I had to dive in my door because boom boom boom boom. Fired off 15 shots then maybe 15 more. When they opened the door, cop got shot somewhere in the face area," Mash said. "I'm still shaking."

La Grange is approximately 70 miles southeast of Austin.
