KFDM/Fox 4 News has learned a judge has arraigned Elizabeth Ann Taylor, 70, in the Jefferson County Jail and set bond at $300,000 on a murder/family violence charge.
Taylor is charged with fatally shooting her boyfriend, Larry Atwood, 58, late Wednesday afternoon on the Eastex Freeway near Home Depot. They were in a vehicle together. He fell onto the road and died at a hospital. She was caught on FM 421 in Hardin County. She was identified Thursday by jail officials as Elizabeth Ann Taylor.
Those close to Taylor say he physically abused her during their two year relationship.
"He was beating the crap out of her," says Carol Lompe, Taylor's sister. She says Taylor was acting in self-defense in the truck when she shot Atwood.
Lompe claims Taylor was being beaten in the vehicle and reached for the gun she had in her purse to try and stop Atwood.
October is national domestic violence month, and Sgt. Cody Guedry of the Beaumont Police Department says victims should reach out before a situation escalates.
"People just got to understand that you can't do that. Let us know, come to the police and let us handle it before it gets out of hand," says Guedry.
He said that when investigators were questioning Taylor they noticed bruises on her arms.
