Beaumont ISD confirms damage to natatorium

The Beaumont Independent School District confirmed Friday that the natatorium at the Thomas Center is damaged.

BISD spokeswoman Nakisha Burns told KFDM/Fox 4 that there is plaster damage in only certain small areas throughout the pool.

Burns said that before Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas coast, BISD had hired a contractor that was patching the plaster and cleaning the pool, while changing the water.

She says the contractor had drained the pool and started cleaning it to prepare for patching the plaster.

Burns tells us when the storm hit Houston, the contractor was unable to get to Beaumont to work on the pool. She said, "Days later, the storm affected our area. The amounts of rain and floodwater saturated the ground, and caused the pool to move ever so slightly, but caused the separation of the plaster to the surface."

The natatorium was completed in 2007.

According to the Beaumont Convention and Visitors Bureau the competition-size natatorium includes an 8-lane pool with depths ranging from 4 feet to 13 feet and has a 515,349 gallon capacity.
