Cat's death causes fear among pet owners in Nederland

Katelyn Pattison and her boyfriend Colton Tate are animal lovers, so you can imagine how horrified they were Sunday morning when they discovered a dead cat at the corner of Nederland Avenue and 22nd Street in Nederland.

The cat's body was ripped apart, leaving its insides exposed. Pattison and Tate work at the Humane Society of Southeast Texas, and have experience with animals. That's why they suspect the cat was the victim of something sinister.

Even Nederland Police Chief Gary Porter admits the cat's death appears odd. Porter said, "It looks weird."

But Chief Porter says he and the city's animal control officer recovered the cat's body and analyzed it. He says it appears the cat was fatally struck by a car.

Pattison and Tate are not fully convinced, and are asking for the public's help to make sure there's not a pet killer out there somewhere.

Pattison said, "If you have any cameras around that might have caught it, that would be great too. Just so we know, especially in this community we have lots of cats running around, a lot of dogs, and if someone is trying to harm something, we have to be aware of that."

Chief Porter encourages anyone who knows of animal cruelty in Nederland to contact the police department and report it.
