Child dies in collision that injured his father in Village Mills

BREAKING NEWS VIDEO UPDATE: The Texas Department of Public Safety says all lanes of US 69 in Village Mills reopened at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday following a collision that claimed the life of a 6-year-old boy from Woodville and seriously injured his father, according to DPS Trooper Stephanie Davis.

His father, 37-year-old Jason Abernathy of Woodville, was driving a Lexus southbound on US 69 at about 4:30 p.m. when for an unknown reason he crossed into the northbound lanes and was struck by a Ryder truck semi-tractor trailer.

The impact caused the Lexus to roll over several times before it came to rest in a ditch.

Abernathy's 6-year-old son died at the scene. Abernathy was seriously injured and taken by ambulance to CHRISTUS Hospital St. Elizabeth.

The driver of the tractor trailer, a 43-year-old man from Longview, didn't appear to be injured but was taken to a hospital for observation.

Troopers were assisted by Hardin County Sheriff Deputies, Wildwood Fire Department, Kountze Fire Department, Silsbee Fire Department and the Texas Department of Transportation.
