Commissioners approve resolution to increase Amtrak service

Commissioners approve resolution to increase Amtrak service

Jefferson County commissioners voted Tuesday afternoon to approve a resolution to increase Amtrak service in Beaumont.

Amtrak only stops in Beaumont tri-weekly, but commissioners are urging government entities to have stops everyday in order to accommodate those who is it, and invigorate the local economy.

"I feel like the use of the train would be much better utilized if people had more certainty on their scheduling," says Jefferson County Judge Jeff Branick.

The route stretches from New Orleans to Los Angeles, and local governments along its path are contacting railroad agencies in order to make their stop more accommodating.

"There's a larger contingency of individuals who utilize that service than I initially realized," says Branick. "I've gotten a number of calls from citizens in the area."
