Edgar 'Sonny' Perkins Jr., longtime Beaumont community activist, dies at 88

Edgar "Sonny" Perkins Jr.

Longtime community activist Edgar "Sonny" Perkins Jr. died last week at Harbor Hospice.

He was 88.

Perkins was an active member of the Beaumont NAACP chapter and Charlton Pollard Alumni Association. He was retired from Gulf States Utilities Company, which ultimately became part of Entergy Texas.

Those close to Perkins say his passion was education.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Bell Perkins; children, Wayne Perkins, Brenda Oliphant, Carolyn Charlton, Peggy Perkins, and Maggie Perkins; 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; also a host relatives and friends.

Visitation is scheduled Thursday at the McCabe-Roberts United Methodist Church (1205 Roberts Avenue) from 9 a.m. to Celebration of Life at 11 a.m. Perkins will be laid to rest at Magnolia Cemetery.
