Federal Court rules Jonathan Torres competent to stand trial
Jonathan Torres, 41, is back behind bars after appearing in Federal Court, Thursday.
Torres is charged with placing explosive devices around SE Texas, and sending threatening messages is competent to stand trial.
In May of last year, Torres was charged with:
- Use of an explosive device to damage property.
- Mailing threatening communication.
- Possession of an unregistered destructive device.
Torres has been evaluated for about six months at a federal mental facility.
A doctor found Torres to be competent enough to stand trial.
However, it's not the final ruling, but Defense Attorney Ryan Gertz says he anticipates the judge's recommendation to be adopted by the district court.
