Forensic tests have confirmed human bones found late last year near the Erin Community are the remains of Jon Smith, 37, of Jasper County, who went missing in mid 2015. That word came late Tuesday from Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman, according to Mike Lout with our media partner KJAS.

The remains were found by a hunter in early December of last year, just off of County Road 350, not far from where Smith was last seen.

Newman said in addition to the bones and pieces of clothing, a bag with Smith's name on it and a bible were also found at the site. However, Newman and others held short of saying the remains were those of Smith until the results of DNA tests were complete.

Shortly after the discovery, the evidence was turned over to the Texas Rangers, who took it to a Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Lab for testing.

However, what caused Smith's death is still a mystery and Newman said no evidence was found that would answer that question.
