Future of Beaumont's Central, Ozen high schools still in limbo
Parents are meeting to discuss the possibility of Central and Ozen high schools merging.
The fate of Central remains up in the air because of air quality issues.
Many parents don't really know what to think or feel at this point, especially those of Central HS students. They don't believe Beaumont ISD is being transparent with them when it comes to the high school.
The estimated cost of a new Central HS is $91.3 million. The estimated price tag for a new combined Central-Ozen campus is almost $138 million.
BISD says any insurance or FEMA claims would not approach anything close to the total cost of those two estimates.
BISD spokesperson Nakisha Burns sent over the following statement on behalf of the district:
The Board of Managers has not made any decisions regarding the consolidation and is still awaiting results from the facility assessment from the damages acquired by Hurricane Harvey at Central. Currently assessments and climate control is taking place. At this time, the district does not have an estimated cost associated with converting Smith to a high school campus. The district will make a decision soon regarding Central High School. All factors are currently being taken into consideration such as the current facility, the impact on the community, the UIL timeline for realignment, and the financial impact on the district.
