70-year-old Lumberton woman arrested, charged with murder in boyfriend's killing

Elizabeth Taylor, 70, of Lumberton

The 70-year-old woman accused of shooting her boyfriend to death Wednesday at the Eastex Freeway near Home Depot in Beaumont is in jail for murder, police say.

She was identified Thursday by jail officials as Elizabeth Ann Taylor.

Those close to her say her boyfriend, 58-year-old Larry Atwood, physically abused her during their two year relationship.

"He was beating the crap out of her," says Carol Lompe.

Lompe is Taylor's sister, and she says that Taylor was acting out of self-defense in the truck. She claims that Taylor was getting beaten in the car, and reached for the gun she had in her purse to try and stop Atwood.

October is national domestic violence month, and Sgt. Cody Guedry of the Beaumont Police Department says victims should reach out before a situation can escalate.

"People just got to understand that you can't do that. Let us know, come to the police and let us handle it before it gets out of hand," says Guedry.

He said that when investigators were questioning Taylor, they noticed bruises on her arms.

No bond will be set until Friday.
