Increase in homeowners shopping for flood insurance
Homeowners in the Golden Triangle are calling insurance companies shopping for flood insurance.
Many insurance agents say their phones are ringing off the hook. According to FEMA, from January to March, Hardin and Jefferson counties combine to have more than 26,000 flood policies in force.
Some insurance agents say homeowners are beginning to reach out after this weeks rain.
Agents say the lack of people buying flood insurance is because of a common misconception: Many homeowners believe they are not in a flood zone.
"It's a good idea to get started today don't wait until tomorrow or the next day," Lester Smith said, Insurance Agent. "We know that we're going to have more rain in the Beaumont area and we're going to have more flooding."
