The African American Cultural Society is organizing Juneteenth events this year starting on June 8. Each year, Commissioner Sinegal's Office acknowledges Juneteenth as the day when slavery finally came to an end in the United States—June 19, 1865. It was on this date that the last group of enslaved people in Texas was informed of their liberation, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was enacted and the Civil War ended.
