It could cost between $75,000 and $100,000 to remove Dr. Carol 'Butch' Thomas' name from the stadium complex, and replace it with Beaumont ISD Memorial Stadium, according to an estimate from longtime contractor and former Beaumont ISD board member Tom Neild.
At a contentious board meeting Thursday night, the district's board of managers voted 6-0 in favor of changing the name.
Some businesses threatened to pull sponsorships and parents said they would not send their children to school to protest the change.
More than a hundred people attended the meeting. Most were outspoken about the desire to "leave the name alone."
Many African-American speakers said they felt the district is trying to erase the achievements of Dr. Thomas, who was the first African-American superintendent for the district.
But many supporters of the change blame Dr. Thomas for the state taking over the district in 2014, adding that those who wanted to keep the name are looking past certain facts.
