New details on Ozen and Central high schools merger

We're learning more about the merging of Ozen and Central high schools.

On Thursday night, the Beaumont ISD board of managers voted unanimously to merge the two schools, citing mold and water damage at Central High School as the reason for the merger.

District officials say $3 million after Tropical Storm Harvey to reduce moisture, but it now appears that the those efforts weren't successful.

The board opted out of spending $19 million to repair the 117-year-old building.

Ozen can hold 1,834 students according to a 2017 report.

Combining the schools will add up to about 2,500 students.

Just one day after the announcement of the merger, the two schools faced off on the basketball court.

KFDM/Fox 4's Peter Eliopoulos spoke with fans about their feelings on the merger.
