Newton Co. Judge: Build dams between Deweyville and Toledo Bend to prevent flooding
The Newton County judge is calling for changes on the Sabine River to help prevent future flooding.
County Judge Paul Price says the best fix to the flooding problem would be to build dams between Deweyville and Toledo Bend.
Price believes the dams would be like a speed bump and would help to mitigate some of the flooding.
A Sabine River Authority official says it would be on-board with building additional dams along the river to create reservoirs in the case of future flooding, but says the Sabine River Authority isn't picking up the tab.
Price says he suspects a levee would have to be built as well.
Resident Betty Worthen's house flooded the past two years.
She says the Sabine River Authority should respond differently when massive flooding is expected.
"They know the storm is coming, but they wait until the dam gets a certain level before they release it," Worthen said. "They need to release it ahead of time.
Judge Price met with state officials last week to discuss potential options and funding.
He says preventing massive floods in the future is a top priority.
