Newton County woman, 61, dies in floodwater
A 61-year-old Newton County woman was killed in floodwaters Wednesday afternoon after she was swept off Highway 87 south of Newton, Sheriff Bill Rowles said Thursday.
The sheriff's office received a call about a vehicle being swept off the road.
Witnesses told investigators that several people tried to save the woman - who was identified as 61-year-old Clementine Thomas, of Newton County - but they were unsuccessful.
The sheriff's office said multiple people put themselves in danger trying to save the woman.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the death.
This is the fifth known storm related death in Southeast Texas. That number could rise as floodwaters recede.
