Property tax rate hike possible to make up for Harvey losses

If you live in Jefferson County, there's the potential for an increase in your property tax rate.

Right now, homeowners are receiving property values for this year, and damage from Harvey is causing many of those values to plummet.

With residents paying less in property taxes... Cities... The county.. and school budgets could suffer.

The appraised value of homes in Jefferson County dropped by more than $100 million.

The Jefferson Central Appraisal District chief appraiser says they'll drop even more when homeowners get the chance to contest those values.

Judge Jeff Branick says the county and other entities may be forced to raise their tax rates --- but he wants to avoid that.
