(KFDM) -- KFDM/Fox 4 has confirmed a shark bit a 42-year-old man at about 10 a.m. Thursday near Crystal Beach on the Bolivar Peninsula.

Lt. Greg Hayes tells KFDM/Fox 4 the man was swimming near a sandbar off Stingray Road when the shark bit him.

The man from the Alvin area was bitten just above the knee on his right leg.

He waded and swam to shore and alerted a deputy who transported him to an EMS station for treatment. He was taken by ambulance to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

The shark bite victim is in stable condition and the injury is not life threatening.

"There are plenty of sharks off the coast," Lt. Hayes told KFDM/Fox 4, "but a bite or attack is rare. Usually, they're black tipped sharks, a smaller shark."

Sheriff Henry Trochesset tells KFDM/Fox 4 investigators believe the presence of stingrays near the shoreline attracted the shark to the area.
