JASPER COUNTY — Not only the sheriff, but also his wife, Jasper County Clerk Debbie Newman can spot and chase suspects when needed.
It all began on Tuesday morning, when a side by side all terrain vehicle was stolen from a home on County 486, just north of Kirbyville. Deputies from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department searched the area, but were unable to find the ATV, or a suspect.
However, shortly before 12:00, Debbie Newman, who had learned earlier in the day about the theft, spotted the ATV, which was occupied by a man and woman near the Jasper Newton Electric Cooperative Office on Highway 190, near the Jasper County Airport.
Newman and unidentified friend, began to follow the vehicle and the chase was on. After dropping off an unidentified female at the JNEC office, the male driver of the ATV proceeded down Farm to Market Road 777 to the south gate of the Jasper County Airport.
Officers said the man apparently found a hole in the fence and made onto the airport as Debbie Newman and others followed. The chase proceeded across a taxiway, then down a runway and off to an area on the east side of the field. The suspect, then went through a gate and into a wooded area, where he wrecked out into small trees, before running into the woods.
Officers continued to search the area and shortly before 3:00 pm, spotted the suspect and captured him on about a half mile east of the airport on Daley Street in the Shady Acres Subdivision.
The suspect who has been identified as Brandon Keith Pickard, 40, of Kountze was taken to the Jasper County Jail, where he is expected to be charged with theft. However, word is that he might be facing other warrants for his arrest as well.
Deputies are reportedly questioning the female passenger of the vehicle. However, they have not released her name.
