Cards to Face UTSA in CIT Opening Round
The Lamar University men's basketball team found out they had qualified for the 2018 CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT) Sunday evening, and Monday morning they were told who their opponent would be. The Cardinals will face former Southland Conference member UTSA (19-14) Wednesday at 7 p.m. in San Antonio.
It marks the second consecutive year that LU has qualified for the CIT, as well as the second-straight year the Red and White will open the tournament against a former Southland Conference member (LU played at Texas State last season).
The Cards make their way into the postseason after a 19-win campaign that saw them finish tied for fifth in the Southland Conference. The Roadrunners (19-14) head to the CIT after having won 19 games and finishing fifth in the Conference USA standings with an 11-7 (.611) record. The Roadrunners won nine of their last 12 games before getting bounced from the CUSA tournament by Marshall in the second round.

The Cardinals have made six appearances in the NCAA Championships, with the last appearance coming in 2012. The Cardinals have also made four trips to the NIT, with the last appearance coming 1986. Big Red is 5-6 (.455) all-time in the NCAA Championships, and 2-4 (.333) in the NIT. Last year, the Cardinals dropped a 70-60 decision at Texas State in the CIT.

The Cardinals are a game over .500 all-time against UTSA in San Antonio (9-8/.529). Wednesday's meeting will be the first between the two schools since the 2016-17 season when the Red and White recorded a 20-point victory, 78-58.
