When fishing for red snapper or other bottom fish, don’t forget about the top half of the water column. For bottom fishing, most offshore anglers position a boat over a reef, wreck or near a petroleum platform and drop baits vertically to the bottom. However, set up a drift line with a small live mackerel, jackfish, mullet or similar bait. Don’t use any weight. Just toss the live baitfish behind the boat and let it swim around. It might attract the attention of a cruising king mackerel, wahoo, cobia or perhaps even a sailfish.
