NOTES FROM THE OUTDOORS
The Key deer, an endangered subspecies of whitetails, lives only in the Florida Keys. The smallest deer in North America, an adult Key buck only grows to about 30 inches tall at the shoulder and might weigh up to 75 pounds, about the size of a large dog. Does usually weigh between 40 to 60 pounds. Key deer easily swim back and forth among the islands where they live. The subspecies nearly went extinct in the 1950s, but now number about 800.
