NOTES FROM THE OUTDOORS
Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the first official flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, by a resolution passed by the Second Continental Congress. June 14 also commemorates the official beginnings of the United States Army, established on June 14, 1775, when Congress authorized the creation of an “American continental army.” President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14 as National Flag Day in 1916. Congress made it official in 1946, but the day actually became a state holiday in Pennsylvania in 1937.
