NOTES FROM THE OUTDOORS
Most saltwater anglers know that diving birds may indicate schools of feeding fish, but the same activity can also help freshwater anglers find hungry bass, stripers or other fish, perhaps even big blue catfish. Under the water, fish chase threadfin shad or other baitfish toward to surface to cut off their escape. Sharp-eyed birds don’t miss much activity. They see the commotion and dive to grab their own shad breakfast. When fishing such a frenzied activity, throw baits that mimic shad like crankbaits, spinnerbaits or topwaters.
