Big flathead catfish normally take live bait, but they sometimes hit cut or whole fresh fish. A large flathead wants a big bait. Many anglers use a 2- to 3-pound skipjack, mullet, gizzard shad or other baitfish. Cut off the tail and toss it into the water for chum. Use everything from the head to just behind the body cavity. Fish it on a Carolina rig with a slip sinker. When a big catfish takes the bait, the line slips through the sinker so the fish doesn’t feel any unnatural weight or resistance
