Texas State University announced the firing of its head football coach Sunday after three years with the program.

Defensive coordinator Chris Woods will coach in Everett Withers' place for the Texas State Bobcats' final game Saturday against Arkansas State. Athletic Director Larry Teis said he informed Withers Sunday morning in a meeting.

"We are thankful for his contributions to our program," Teis said. "His teams performed well academically and were heavily involved in the San Marcos community. But we didn't have the same type of success on the field. We were close several times this season but we just didn't win the games."

Withers won seven games in three seasons (25.0 winning percentage) with Texas State. The Bobcats finished 2-10 in Withers' first season in 2016 and followed it with another 2-10 mark in 2017. Texas State is 3-8 this season, with two wins in the Sun Belt Conference tying them for last.

President Denise Trauth said the university appreciates Withers' tenure with the program.

"We did the right thing academically and off the field, but the Sun Belt Conference is a tough league."
